According to the latest survey of Singapore’s Best Employers 2022 as commissioned by The Straits Times, Google, EDB and the Lego group take the top spots with high scores of 9.16,8.72 and 8.71 respectively. Tens of thousands of evaluations together with opinions of thousands of workers and the scores for hundreds of companies were taken into evaluation, with the 200 highest scoring employers being recognised. Country Managing Director for Google said that employees need to “find satisfaction in their role, feel included at work, have their unique needs looked after, and have opportunities to develop and grow” while working remotely. Google has also implemented “global days off, wellbeing bonuses, no meeting weeks” to help employees “prioritise self-care”.

How the survey was conducted
Each company with minimally 200 employees qualifies for the ranking, from an initial list of more than 1700 employers. To capture other eligible companies, not on the list, the question on the name of one’s employer is an open-ended one.

Employers were grouped into one of the following 27 industries:

1. Construction
2. Oil & Gas Operations, Mining & Chemicals
3. Utilities
4. Engineering, Manufacturing
5. Automotive (Automotive & Suppliers)
6. Aerospace & Defence
7. Drugs & Biotechnology
8. Semiconductors, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Technology Hardware & Equipment
9. Healthcare Equipment & Services
10. Packaged Goods
11. Food, Soft Beverages, Alcohol & Tobacco
12. Transportation & Logistics
13. Banking & Financial Services

27. Travel & Leisure

The survey was also conducted anonymously through online access panels. Participants register and are invited to take part in surveys for which they qualify according to their socio-demographic data. The final sample consisted of over 17,000 employees. More than 200,000 recommendations were evaluated based on 2 distinct criteria:

1. Direct recommendations:
Respondents were asked to rate their willingness to recommend their employer to family and friends on a scale from 0 to 10, where 0 means “I wouldn’t recommend my employer under any circumstances” and 10 means “I would recommend my employer.”

2. Indirect recommendations:
Employees were asked about their willingness to recommend other employers in their industry and were shown an industry list of pre-researched employers to give an opinion for those that stood out positively or negatively e.g. “would recommend”, “no opinion”, “would not recommend”.

Employers then receive a calculated score based on the direct and indirect recommendations, with a greater weight given to direct recommendations. Their score from the previous year was also included with a small weight (if any). Finally, they were ranked according to their total score. Scores of 200 awarded companies are above average and constitute the top 12 percent. Respondents were also asked additional 40 questions on various aspects of their job (salary, work-life balance, potential for development), their work environment, and their employer’s reputation on a 5-point scale.
