How to allow workers to flourish in flexible work conditions

Flexible Work vs Hybrid Work

Flexible work and hybrid work shouldn’t be used interchangeably, according to Business Times.

True flexible working conditions should mean that workers get to choose where, when, and how they do their work depending on business needs and individual preferences. Workers are still expected to deliver the same or even better outcomes. However, hybrid work means that workers must be in the office on some days. There is some flexibility but it still assumes that productivity is correlated to the amount of time spent in the office, not what you accomplish. People may show up to work because they have to be there instead of having something they need to do in the office.

Some workers work best when they are not constantly around others. As introverts, often perform best when they are alone and they get drained when they are surrounded by people. This same group of workers also focus best when they can work in long stretches, without interruptions, and have the flexibility to take breaks when they need them.

 

A better approach to managing flexible work conditions
A better approach would perhaps be having managers make the right calls. Determine what activities are to be done in-office and what remaining activities could be completed remotely. 

On the whole, activities that rely on group engagement such as team bonding, brainstorming, orientation, and important meetings could be more effective when everyone is on-site. Individual activities should be completed from home. Employers want to ensure optimal productivity and employee engagement while employees want to maximise their overall well-being and productivity. Both employees and managers need to work together responsibly to experiment with various methods that could work for everyone.
