Essential Job Hunting Tips During the Pandemic

As of 2020, job hunting during the pandemic has proven challenging for all of us. Especially with the economic slowdown and companies closing down and cutting costs. According to Forbes, research shows that the sectors hit the worst were retail, events/entertainment, arts, recreation, travel and trade industries.

However, those industries which thrived and managed to grow during the pandemic were:

• Technology

• E-commerce

• Food & Beverage

• Healthcare

 

Changing landscape

With the changing landscape, it was reported from Gartner that around 74% of companies have intended to shift some employees to work permanently. During the pandemic, many companies have leveraged on online platforms for teleconferencing. ZOOM became the most frequently used.

Companies have adopted a more digital shift in order to continue carrying out operations and ensure business survival, since many are restricted from going to office.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, job hunting still continues, as there have been numerous retrenchment and restructuring. Job seekers are abundance while vacancies are limited. However, there are some industries as mentioned above which are continuing to grow, thrive and expand.

Here are some tips you may find useful, once you have decided on the right jobs which fit your skill set to apply for.

 

1. Work on your CV

Having an impressive CV is important when presenting yourself to employers. Try focusing on what ideal role and job you would like to do. Try pinpointing your key skill sets and including them into your CV and job descriptions. It is important to make a personal statement which is convincing to the employers.

 

2. Preparing for interviews

Interviews these days will most likely be online. It is advisable to do a test of the online platform used by the company prior to the interview. Make sure your camera settings are correct, good lighting, and a professional background.

While waiting for responses from the employers, hiring managers or recruiters, here are somethings you can do in the meantime.

 

 

3. Improving personal skills

Enrolling in online classes to upgrade your skill set. For example, taking classes in Digital marketing, UI/UX design, etc. Try to up-skill yourself so that you resume looks more impressive to your future employers. Such platforms offering these courses are NTUC learning hub, My Skills Future, Coursera, Google Academy or Udemy.

 

4. Build your personal brand

Take the time to update your Linkedin Profile, by adding in skill sets newly acquired. Lastly, do not forget the most important step. Take care of your wellbeing & health While job hunting, please do not forget to take care of your mental and physical health. It is important to stay positive and prioritise self care.
